Backus Hospital

The Hospital is a Level 3 Trauma Center. For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. Backus is home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and is the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. The Hospital delivers and coordinates a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of its communities.


Surgical Critical Care Advanced Practitioner Role Scope

  • Backus Hospital's Surgical Critical Care Team is committed to creating an innovative patient centered delivery system that continuously improves quality of care.
  • The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (APRN) providers are part of a multidisciplinary team that plans and delivers care for complex surgical patients including: general surgery, trauma, vascular, thoracic, and other critical care patients as the service needs dictate. 
  • The Advanced Practice Provider works in collaboration with the attending surgical intensivist, the primary surgical admitting team and consultants.
  • Responsibilities include managing multiple patients with varied critical illness, comprehensive physical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator management, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), daily progress notes, patient/family education and meetings.
  • Extensive 6-month immersion orientation with educational lectures, and case simulation.  Dedicated preceptors to provide training and supervision for patient management and skills such as arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes as well as bedside percutaneous tracheostomy and PEG tube placement.

Advanced Practitioner Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioners (APRN) positions require National certification in Advanced Practice, MSN, and current CT Nurse Practitioner (APRN) License or eligible required.
  • Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) board certification required for nurse practitioners.
  • Physician Assistants (PA) positions require current CT Physician Assistants (PA) License and Board certification or eligible.
  • All disciplines require Federal DEA, and CT Controlled Substance Registration
  • Critical Care experience in Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) preferred but not required.
  • Clinical rotation within critical care preferred (but not required) for new grads
  • ATLS to be supported by Backus.
