For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.
Under direction of Department Director, manages the day-to-day operations and activities of the Maintenance and Plant Operations Departments to provide adequate utilities, maintenance and repair service to the Hospital facility and all off site facilities in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner.
Education: High School (or equivalent) or trade school graduate with two years additional training in the maintenance and/or facilities management field. Bachelor degree in an engineering discipline or business administration preferred.
Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years in a healthcare or institutional maintenance field. Five (5) to seven (7) years in a hospital or institutional supervisory or managerial capacity preferred.
License and Certification: Valid driver’s license with clean record required. Past or present certification in a skilled trade such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, stationery operating engineer or carpentry preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
Ability to communicate technical or complex information and present effective and persuasive discussions at all levels within the organization. Also has the ability to represent WWBH to external agencies and organizations. Varied technical knowledge with emphasis on hospital steam plant operation and building maintenance trades. Knowledge of JC , NFPA, DPH, OSHA, EPA, DEEP and building codes necessary. Ability to manage time and meet deadlines in a hectic work environment. Proficient in Windows based software (including word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation programs) required in order to perform a multitude of job duties.

Requires the ability to take the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances or problems, sometimes in a stressful environment or emergency situation. Considerable decision making authority concerning the daily activities of the work unit, including providing recommendation for department policy change.
