Job Description:

Our Nurses work in collaborative environments with strong interdisciplinary teams, focused on a patient centered care model in a richly diverse work space. Under the direction and general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the registered nurse utilizes evidence based practices in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act, policies and procedures of the hospital and as directed by the medical staff. The registered nurse who through knowledge and ability uses the nursing process to develop a plan of care which includes standards of practice to meet the physical, emotional spiritual, cultural and educational needs of the patient and family.

The Block Nurse is an expert in the nursing care of patients undergoing regional anesthesia procedures including knowledge of anesthetic agents and techniques. This nurse will partner with anesthesiologists and the perioperative team to provide excellence in pain management through strong procedural performance, critical thinking, advocation, and compassion.

Education and Professional Practice

  • Preoperatively the block nurse will educate the patient on the purpose and use of a peripheral nerve block to control pain and other medications that will be available if the block alone is ineffective for pain control.
  • The block nurse will inform the patient to expect feelings of numbness and tingling to affected area, what to expect when nerve block wears off, and how to protect areas with altered sensation.
  • Post operatively the block nurse will complete follow-up questionnaires in person or by phone on patients that received regional anesthesia care.
  • The block nurse will assist anesthesia in research and quality improvement processes.

Assist with Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia

  • The block nurse’s responsibility will be to prepare patients for the administration of regional anesthesia including and not limited to:
  • Positioning and operation of the ultrasound machine (entering patient data, adjusting display settings, saving images, and uploading images to patient’s record in Epic)
  • Positioning and prepping patients
  • Drawing up and labeling medications
  • Administration of sedation under direct supervision of the anesthesia provider
  • Maintaining sterile technique
  • Documentation
  • Operating the peripheral nerve stimulator
  • Cleaning and processing of equipment
  • Stocking the block cart

Patient Assessment and Monitoring

  • Pre-procedure the block nurse will perform a full physical assessment, ensure intravenous catheter placement and patency, and participate in and lead the time out.
  • Intra-procedure the block nurse will
  • Monitor the patient during procedural sedation including vital signs, respiratory status, and pain.
  • Be an expert in injection techniques (aspiration, injection pressure, and resistance) and inject local anesthetic under the direction of anesthesiologist and within the scope of the Connecticut nursing practice act.
  • Post-procedure the block nurse will assess for complications (neurological, hematoma, infection, falls, drug errors, and for local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST).
  • The block nurse will ensure complete handoff and safe transfer of care to the perioperative RN.


  • Current unrestricted Connecticut RN License.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school (BSN preferred).
  • Proof of Arrhythmia Certification required prior to date of hire.
  • BLS certification by the American Heart Association prior to date of hire.
  • ACLS certification by the American Heart Association prior to date of hire for external candidates and within 90 days for internal candidates.
  • 1 year of recent Perioperative, Block Nurse, PACU, or ICU experience.
