St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. St. Vincent’s is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system’s second-largest hospital.


The wound and ostomy nurse provides clinical expertise, education, consultation, leadership and research to the organization in relation to patients and staff with wound, skin, ostomy and continence needs. This position is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation and care of wounds, fistulae, pressure ulcers, skin breakdown, ostomy care and incontinence. In addition, this position:

  • Serves as a resource to patients, staff, physicians and management.
  • Allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective and compassionate care related to wound, skin, ostomy and continence throughout the organization.
  • Facilitates the development of collegial relationships both in the Fairfield region and across HHC.  
  • Promotes the profession of nursing and professional practice.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.


  • Provides expert consultation and/or hands-on care for individual patients with acute or chronic wounds. Serves as a consultant to provide insight and potential solutions for complex clinical cases to improve patient care and outcomes. Establishes and coordinates a multidisciplinary and comprehensive management plan. Collaborates with the wound care team to provide consults on the off shift and weekend.
  • Coordinates care for populations of patients, identifying trends, and developing standardized prevention and treatment protocols and refining protocols based on outcomes.
  • Develops and implements educational programs and protocols for patients, staff and other health care providers that address the prevention and management of skin breakdown
  • Participates in, and coordinates quality improvement initiatives to optimize skin and wound outcomes.
  • Notifies supervising clinician when the wound deteriorates or fails to progress.




  • BSN required, Master's Degree in Nursing or higher preferred.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care, Health Care Administration or Business or CRA (Certified Radiology Administrator) preferred.


  • Minimum of 2 Years of progressive wound and skill experience in clinical practice required. 5 or more years of active clinical nursing experience preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration


  • Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH.
  • Completion of a WOCN Society accredited educational program; Certified in wound and ostomy (CWON)
  • BLS certification.
