Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist, the Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation therapy planning team, familiar with the physical and geometric characteristics of radiation equipment and radioactive sources commonly used for patient treatments. The Dosimetrist has the training and expertise necessary to generate treatment plans and assist with the measurement of radiation dose distributions and calculations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Utilizes external beam data, radioisotope data and the knowledge of radiation therapy equipment, clinical oncology and physics to derive computerized or manual treatment plans and calculations for the purpose of providing an optimal dose distribution for each patient in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist’s prescription.
  • Provides calculation methods for the delivery of prescribed dose and subsequent documentation for patient record (chart) and verification of the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.
  • Implements department protocols and quality assurance programs to ensure the accuracy of patient documents by performing weekly chart reviews, attending and participating in new patient presentations and chart rounds.
  • Assists in the application of specific methods of dosimetry including diodes, TLD, film measurements or other QA as directed by the Medical Physicist.
  • Provides physics and technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation protection and quality assurance of radiation therapy equipment.
  • Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization by assuring optimal patient positioning utilizing dedicated devices, including treatment simulators, CT and MRI, in order to achieve the maximum benefit from the patient’s simulation.
  • Assists in intracavitary and interstitial sealed source procedures under the direction of the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist.
  • Shares the knowledge of Medical Dosimetry in the clinical setting through lectures, training and written instructions to assist in the development of knowledgeable and expert staff.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board or a bachelor’s degree with successful completion of a recognized dosimetry training program required
  • One year of practical supervised experience by a Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist required
  • Licensure, Certification, Registration: MDCB
