The Pharmacy Department at Backus consists of Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacists who work together in a collaborative team environment meeting the needs of our patients.

Job description:

The Pharmacy Secretary handles a variety of administrative support for the Pharmacy Department.  Responsibilities include but, are not limited to the following:

  • Answers telephone in a polite and professional manner and communicates appropriate information. Directs calls and takes complete and accurate messages when necessary.
  • Performs Receptionist activities when in the office. Processes incoming and outgoing department mail. Maintains an adequate supply of routine office supplies. Orders supplies as needed.
  • Coordinates controlled substance discrepancy notification programs. Alerts member of management staff of any discrepancy issues that require immediate attention.
  • Produces correspondence and other documents (i.e., forms, policies, manuals, and minutes). Enters and compiles statistics for department reports as needed.
  • Schedules appointments and meetings. Makes appropriate arrangements for meetings, including room reservations and preparation of agenda.
  • Develops and maintains department filing system, including controlled substance receipts. Follows up with units delinquent in returned required documentation.
  • Proactively works with management to foster a culture of patient safety and acts upon and reports safety concerns appropriately and in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Provides backup coverage for pharmacy technicians for selected assignments.
  • Assists Pharmacy Manager in updating of Kronos schedule and payroll.
  • Provides primary backup coverage for Anticoagulation Clinic receptionist. Provides flexible scheduling coverage and assists in fulfilling staffing requirements in both routine and unforeseen circumstances in accordance with departmental and hospital wide needs.
  • Coordinates department medication inspection program. Performs inspections as assigned and reports to manager current status of inspections as requested.



High school diploma or equivalent.

Two (2) years experience as a secretary or a pharmacy technician

License and Certification:
Must be A Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern with the CT Department of Public Health within 30 days of hire.
