Our brand NEW Emergency Department-based Observation Unit at Hartford Hospital is a fast-paced, 20 bed unit devoted to the management of patients requiring observation status. Our team of Registered Nurses, Providers, Techs, administrative professionals and support staff is dedicated specifically to this unit, where we continue to provide safe, personalized, compassionate care to all our patients. This unit’s focus is on the provision of care to patients requiring a period of Observation before a medical decision can be made regarding patient admission vs. discharge. All rooms are equipped with new, state of the art technology to support even the most acute of patients.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Associate performs delegated functions as a member of a patient care team to provide a variety of services. These activities contribute to meeting the health care, safety and comfort needs of patients, and are performed in accordance with all existing regulatory and hospital standards, policies and procedures. Reports to Unit Manager.

Provides safe and appropriate basic patient care, as delegated by a Registered Nurse, in order to assist patients in achieving established outcomes by: performing comfort measures; assisting patients with activities of daily living (eg. basic hygiene, toileting, nutrition, etc.); collecting data points (eg. vital signs, EKG's, phlebotomy, blood glucose monitoring, etc.); performing direct patient observation; reporting changes in patient condition to RN; and reinforcing patient education.

Qualifications

Required:
High school graduate or equivalent
Effective communication skills
Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak English, and perform basic Mathematics
CPR validation within 3 months of hire
Physical effort as specified by Position Physical Requirements and Occupational Exposure form
Specific certification as designated by work area may be required.

Preferred:
Certification as nursing assistant (CNA)
Matriculation in a nursing program
Completion of education in a related health field (i.e. medical assistant program, EMT certification, etc.)
Previous patient care experience; specific experience as designated by work area maybe required
Demonstrated competencies in a related field at Hartford Hospital.
