For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities. 

Assists in the performance of duties necessary to operate and maintain boilers and other auxiliary equipment for producing steam for heat and power for the Hospital.


High school or trade school graduate in a mechanical discipline with additional training specific to stationary operating engineering.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years in boiler/steam plant operation.

License and Certification: Current OE-2 license (S-1 or S-2 Class licenses are also acceptable) and valid Connecticut drivers license required.

Completion of an operating stationary engineer training program of not less than three years as approved by the CT Department of Consumer Protection.

Experience: Five (5) to seven (7) years as an Operating Stationary Engineer performing work in a physical power plant associated with industrial or healthcare facilities.

License and Certification: S-1 or S-2 license with ability to obtain an OE-2 license within 6 months.

Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).

Requires the ability to exercise discretion and use good judgment to perform duties promptly and consistently with little direction.
