For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.
Collects blood specimens from patients for analysis in the laboratory using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques. Registers patients in Hospital Information System as necessary. Enters, receives and modifies orders for laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System. Performs all aspects of specimen processing as required.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent AND a graduate of a phlebotomy training program/medical assistant program or equivalent OR successful completion of a phlebotomy training program/medical assistant program; must produce copy of official transcript and diploma within nine (9) months of hire. Associates degree preferred.
Experience: No previous experience is required. One (1) year previous experience preferred.
License and Certification: PBT (ASCP or equivalent) preferred.
Language Skills: Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
Basic medical terminology and understanding of laboratory services. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with others; ability to give and follow written and oral instructions; ability to exercise independent judgment in work environment, ability to remain calm and function in stressful situations. Basic computer knowledge in order to enter/retrieve data.
PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Exercises informed judgment and uses individual competence and qualifications as criteria for prioritizing patient needs, seeking consultation, and performing duties to accomplish expected outcomes. Ability to react and perform under strict timelines and/or emergency situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
