St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Float Nurse Manager, the Nursing Supervisor collaborates with the nurse managers to provide direction, coordination and supervision of the nursing personnel involved in the delivery of direct patient care on the day shift. As the administrative person on site, evaluates the quality of patient care, ensures the needs of patients are considered in planning and providing care, provides for appropriate staffing and scheduling for the nursing units and functions as a resource to other departments. Responsible for coordinating staffing, patient flow and daily operations to optimize safety, efficiency, productivity and experience.



  • In partnership with Nursing Leadership team, insures staffing resources are deployed appropriately. Continuously monitors and adjusts staffing to volume in order to optimize productivity while meeting patient care needs.
  • Collaborates with Care Logistics Center (CLC) to ensure optimal patient flow, effective capacity management utilization and a safe, exceptional patient experience. Provides local oversight for inter facility transfers.
  • Facilitates cross departmental activities such as Complex Care Rounds, daily discharge huddles, patient flow huddles, construction/facility projects or equipment installations.
  • Directs and coordinates nursing, clinical and support services as a resource for resolving problem situations and coordinating hospital wide activities.
  • Serves as a conduit to leadership and administrator on call for communication and direction of critical patient, employee or operational events including severe weather or other local disasters.
  • Collaborates with Nursing leadership and Quality team to provide oversight, feedback and coaching on staff performance regarding nurse sensitive quality indicators. Serves as a resource on policies, procedures and best practice guidelines.
  • Other Duties as assigned.


Licensure / Certification / Registration:


Required Credential(s):

  • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Connecticut Department of Public Health obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.


One or more of the following:

  • Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 2 Months (60 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
  • Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Red Cross obtained within 2 Months (60 days) of hire date or job transfer date.



  • BSN required; Master’s preferred.
  • Min 3 years’ acute hospital experience with supervisory experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements:

  • Strong clinical background with ability to coach and mentor novice nurses.
  • Knowledge of hospital operations and organizational priorities.
  • Proven problem solver, flexible and functions well under demanding conditions.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence at all levels of the organization.
