Critical Care Advanced Practitioner Role Scope
Surgical Critical Care Team is committed to creating an innovative patient
centered delivery system that continuously improves quality care.
Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (APRN) providers are part of a
multidisciplinary team that plans and delivers care for complex multiple
surgical patient populations including: general surgery, trauma, vascular,
thoracic, liver transplants, and other critical care patients as the
service needs dictate.
The Advanced Practice
Provider works in collaboration with the attending intensivist, critical
care fellows, residents, the primary admitting team and consultants.
Responsibilities include managing
multiple patients with varied critical illness, comprehensive physical
assessments, interpretation of diagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator
management, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), daily
progress notes, patient/family education and meetings.
Extensive 6 month immersion orientation
with educational lectures, and case simulation in our Center for
Education, Simulation & Innovation. Dedicated preceptors to provide
training and supervision for patient management and skills such as
arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, and feeding tubes.

Advanced Practitioner Requirements
Practitioners (APRN) positions require National certification in Advanced
Practice, MSN, and current CT Nurse Practitioner (APRN) License or
acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) board certification required for
Assistants (PA) positions require current CT Physician Assistants (PA)
License and Board certification or eligible.
disciplines require Federal DEA, and CT Controlled Substance Registration
Care experience in Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) preferred.
rotation within critical care required for new grads
