For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.

The Radiation Safety Physicist, under the oversight of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), is responsible for implementation of the radiation safety programs and compliance with radiation protection rules codified in State and Federal Regulations throughout the Hartford Healthcare Hospital Facilities in the East Region.


• Master’s in Health Physics, or
• Master’s in Medical Physics, or
• Bachelor’s degree in radiation science (see experience below)

• Five (5) years professional experience health physics, medical health physics or medical physics in a medical safety program, or
If Bachelor’s degree - Ten (10) years as a medical Radiation Safety Officer or related medical regulatory radiation program oversight experience.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:
Applicable Board certification by
• ABHP (American Board of Health Physics) or,
• ABNMS (American Board of science in Nuclear Medicine) or,
• ABMP (American Board of Medical Physicist or,
• ABR (American Board of Radiology)


Preferred Requirements

Graduate degree in Health physics

Radiation safety programs management. Experience as a Medical Radiation Safety Officer or related medical regulatory radiation program oversight.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:
ABHP (American Board of Health Physics)
