Hartford HealthCare (HHC) Cancer Institute is a fully certified member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Alliance. The MSK Cancer Alliance is an initiative designed to establish partnerships between MSK and local care providers. Through the open collaboration that is facilitated by these partnerships, community cancer caregivers are in a better position to provide state of the art, evidence-based cancer care to improve the lives of cancer patients. Advanced Practitioner Role Scope 

  • Provides direct medical evaluation and care to patients enrolled in research studies including Phase I, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Industry trials.
  • Screening of new patients who are deemed candidates for a trial; medical management while on protocol and in follow-up in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Medical management includes assessment of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities related to therapy.
  • Role responsibilities include performing history and physical examinations, ordering and interpretation of lab work, ordering of appropriate medications and treatments and provide patient and staff education regarding the protocol and potential adverse reactions to observe and report. 
  • The Research Advanced Practice Nurse will have an in-depth knowledge of the protocols assigned and be willing to provide cross-coverage when needed in other trials.
  •  In addition the Research Advanced Practice Nurse will have knowledge of the assigned protocol requirements and assure they are completed in a timely fashion and in accordance with sponsoring agency and IRB.
  • Provides education to Oncology APP/nursing staff/medical staff regarding specific protocols, identification and grading of serious adverse and adverse side effects.
  • Participate in Nursing Research Council and develop Quality Improvement Projects for Phase I trial patients.

Advanced Practitioner Qualifications  

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner Master’s program preferred
  • Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant / Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of Connecticut
  • Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant or National Board Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
  • Certification in Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Clinical trials experience preferred
