Duties 
The Billing Representative handles and resolves billing questions from patients, guarantors, carriers and hospital departments, follows up on payment for outstanding claims, collects unpaid patient balances and researches and resolves denied claims.

Responsibilities

• Reviews patient statements prior to statement processing per weekly bill cycles.
• Reviews aged insurance claim report for each assigned area once per month. 
• Contacts carriers to determine status of payment on claims greater than 45 days old.
• Corrects registration or coding errors as required to resolve claim issues.
• Resubmits claims as required to secure payment including secondary claims requiring coordination of benefits.
• Reviews and resolves claim denials from remittance advices.
• Adjusts patient accounts for uncollectible or un-processable balances.
• Reviews aged AR report for unpaid patient balances once per month.
• Contacts patients/sends collection letter per collection procedure once per month.
• Obtains medical record documentation from departments and submits to carriers as required to support payment of claims or fulfill requests for documentation.
• Processes refunds to insurance carriers and patients for credit balances due to overpayments or duplicate payments.
• Researches returned mail for valid address and resends statements. Flags skipped accounts.
• Serves as back up telephone operator for main department extension as required.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Performs daily tasks with speed and accuracy.
• Responds to all customer inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Requirements
High School Diploma required.

Must have billing knowledge.

 
Minimum Requirements
Minimum of 2 years experience in a medical office environment or equivalent combination of education or experience. Experience with a practice management computer system, preferably Mysis Vision.
Ability to use a personal computer and 12-key calculator.

 
Preferred Qualifications
Some college preferred. Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written). Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Flexibility and initiative in supporting needs of the department as they arise
