Department Description:
The SBO Self-Pay department works with patients and their families with regard to their ability to pay their Hartford Healthcare medical bills. The financial counselors help patients to obtain coverage, financial assistance, free bed funds and/or payment plans in order to assist with payment of their outstanding balances. The department also maintains a call center to field calls/disputes/questions from providers, patients and customers.
Position Summary:
In a multi-entity hospital and professional office environment, the Financial Counseling Specialist is responsible for analysis, investigation and resolution of patient balances. This role includes ensuring self pay receivables (uninsured and patient balance after insurance) and free bed funds are processed and resolved according to department policies and regulatory guidelines.

Reports To: Manager, Self-Pay
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent work experience is required. Associate's Degree is preferred.Experience: Minimum of 2 – 4 years of self-pay billing and/or collections experience with a hospital, professional office, or healthcare vendor. Minimum of 1 year of experience in a multi-entity system with EPIC. Experience with Medicaid Eligibility and Financial Assistance Programs.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: HBI Patient Financial Services Certified is preferred, but not required.
Language Skills: English, Spanish and/or Polish
