St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. JOB SUMMARY

This position is an essential member of the nursing leadership team.

The wound and ostomy nurse provides clinical expertise, education, consultation, leadership and research to the organization in relation to patients and staff with wound, skin, ostomy and continence needs. Serves as a resource to patients, staff, physicians and management. Allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective and compassionate care related to wound, skin, ostomy and continence throughout the organization. Facilitates the development of collegial relationships both in the Fairfield region and across HHC. Visible, accessible and committed to communicating effectively with staff. Promotes the profession of nursing and professional practice. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of wounds, fistulae, pressure ulcers, skin breakdown, ostomy care and incontinence.

Reports to the Director of Nursing Professional Development and Magnet Program.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • BSN required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 Years of progressive wound and skill experience in clinical practice.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH.
  • Completion of a WOCN Society accredited educational program; Certified in wound and ostomy (CWON)
  • BLS certification.

 

Preferred Requirements

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or higher.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of active clinical nursing experience.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Completion of a WOCN Society accredited educational program; Certified in wound, ostomy and continence. (CWOCN)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements

  • Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Facilitates prevention and treatment interventions per protocol.
  • Advocates for the patient with skin and wound care needs and for the professional practice.
  • Reviews cases for quality improvement; formulates, implements, and evaluates plans for improvement in coordination with the interdisciplinary team and other nursing personnel.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop and deliver and educational programs.
  • Collaborates with the wound care team to provide consults on the off shift and weekend.
  • Working knowledge of high reliability and LEAN process improvement strategies.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to education as a methodology for promoting continuous quality improvement in the delivery of patient care and services.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and excel.
