Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a 122-bed, general acute care community hospital located in Torrington, Connecticut, that serves as a regional health care resource for the 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut.  CHH offers personalized attention from an expert team of caregivers and physicians that utilize advanced technology and clinical partnerships in a convenient, safe and comfortable patient environment.



Assists the surgeon at the sterile field by providing appropriate and adequate sterile instruments and other supplies during the operative procedure.  Maintain the surgical field through aseptic practices. Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse as a member of the pre-operative team. Assists in the nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient for surgery.  Responsible for the assembly of cases. Works cooperatively with ancillary departments and other team members. Participates in performance improvement activities.  Assists the department as needed. CPR Certification. Certification within one year.



1.  Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to procedure.

  2. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques used by various surgeons for various procedures.

  3. Able to assemble and troubleshoot all equipment as necessary for procedure.

  4. Ensures all necessary equipment is in the room prior to the start of a case, including non-narcotic medications (e.g., Lidocaine).

  5. Able to safely operate all electrosurgical equipment, diagnostic equipment, microscopic laser equipment, video equipment, and disposable equipment, as well as equipment unique to each specialty area.

  6. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile technique.

  7. Updates and rewrites preference cards as indicated. Communicates changes/needs to inventory coordinator.

2.  Pursues professional growth and development.

  1. Attends hospital sponsored training programs, as required by department.

  2. Maintains CPR certification.

  3. Completes annual mandatory in-services.

  4. Maintains technical skill level and adapts to changes in surgical technique and operative intervention modalities.

3.  Performs all responsibilities/duties required, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. 

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection, as evidenced by practice.

  2. Demonstrates an understanding of operating room sanitation and assists in its maintenance.

  3. Handles all surgical specimens appropriately.

  4. Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique. Communicates to circulating RN and surgeons breaks in technique.

  5. In conjunction with the RN, conducts accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to departmental policies.

  6. Performs surgical scrub according to departmental policies.

  7. Assists in the positioning of patients and maintains their safety.

  8. Monitors skin integrity and communicates to circulating RN.

4.  Functions as a role model for current and new surgical staff.

  1. Accepts assignment as preceptor for new staff.

  2. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff and nurse manager toward the organization.

  3. Trains and assists (environmental services) turnover teams with operating room protocol and procedures for new and existing team members.

5.  Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.

  1. Attends all required safety education programs.

  2. Provides complete and accurate responses to safety questions.

  3. Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner, as instructed.

  4. Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.

  5. Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.

6.  Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.

  2. Ensures a safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.

  3. Attends annual education programs.

7.  Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  1. Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner, as observed by nurse manager and peers.

  2. Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner, as measured by management observation and peer input.

  3. Maintains professional composure and confidence during stressful situations.

  4. Maintains open communication using appropriate chain of command regarding issues.

  5. Conducts all work activities with respect for rights and wishes of patients, visitors, families, and fellow employees.

  6. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.

  7. Presents neat appearance in proper attire and identification, as required by the position, department, and hospital policy.

  8. Continuously displays a “can do” attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place at hospital.

8.  Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.

  1. Participates in staff meetings, as determined by Clinical Manager of Surgical Services.

  2. Supports the hospital’s mission, policies, and procedures through attendance and participation at committee meetings, if applicable.

  3. Utilizes automated system to communicate inter- and intradepartmentally, as appropriate.

  4. Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by nurse manager.

  5. Reports to work on time, as observed by nurse manager.

  6. Is at work as scheduled, as observed by nurse manager.

9.  Maintains accurate documentation.

  • Completes incident reports when indicated.

  • Signs intraoperative nursing record ensuring that counts are complete.

10.  Assumes all other duties and responsibilities.


11.  As Service Leader, collaborates with the Clinical Manager of Surgical Services on the responsibilities and duties of said particular surgical specialty.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and interest in a particular surgical specialty.

  • Coordinate and process specialty physician request to meet their equipment/supply/service needs and reports to staff about changes.

  • Inventory service specific supplies and maintain adequate levels per specified par levels with our inventory persona.

  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of surgeons’ needs preferences and protocols within the assigned specialty area, by communicating effectively with the surgeons, anesthesiologists and staff members.

  • Create, maintain and update preference cards within the given specialty.

  • Works with Inventory Control Specialist on trial and implantation of new items.

  • Research new technology of the specialty area and provide updates to staff as necessary.

  • Can scrub and circulate the majority of cases within assigned specialty areas and is able to troubleshoot specialty area and provide updates to staff as necessary.

  • Acts as a liaison to facilitate the communication of information between departments and staff members under the supervision of the l Clinical Manager of Surgical Services.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relations with co-workers in other departments of the hospital to ensure on-going quality of care and customer service.

  • Identify needs and coordinates/participates with educational components of the given specialty.

  • Support staff with case record documentation

  • Attends educational seminars and presents that information to Staff.

  • Assists in the orientation process of new hires.

  • Work with Clinical Resource Coordinators on a new employee orientation.

  • Assists with Group and Team education.

  • Works with SPD on specialty equipment particulars related to cleaning.

Wears proper identification while on duty. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management. Reports to work on time and meets acceptable standard for attendance. Attends a minimum of two staff meetings, reads minutes for all staff meetings, and participates in committees as required. CPR certification.
