Purpose: The intent of this Fellowship is to help increase the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Critical Care Nurses. This program is devoted to the role of the critical care nurse and designed to provide students with a foundational didactic and practical learning experience. The Fellowship will enhance the student’s education through direct observation of patient care and exposure to critical care nursing responsibilities. Opportunities to attend relevant internal educational programs and meetings with staff members at Hartford Healthcare hospitals will provide additional learning experiences for the nursing student.
The fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of practice utilizing observational and hands on learning experiences. It consists of a combination of instructor facilitated mock scenario validations and on-unit nursing practices. The programs objectives pertain to the fundamentals of Critical Care nursing with the goal of setting up a foundational framework to transition the nursing student, once graduated, into a Critical Care nurse. Working together with the Nurse Educators, Critical Care services and Critical Care nurse preceptors; the students will gain exposure to:
1. Foundations of the critical care nursing practice
2. Key elements of the professional role of the critical care nurse
3. Assessment in the critical care setting
4. Ethics related to nursing practice and patient care in the critical care setting
5. Patient education
6. Quality, Safety and Risk management
7. Methods and practices to control and prevent infection in the critical care setting.
The student fellow will be guided in a basic research project related to critical care nursing. The responsibilities of the nursing fellow in relation to the research experience include; choice in research topic, comprehensive literature review, investigative work, and poster creation. The culmination of the research experience will include a presentation of the research poster to the Fellowship group, nursing instructors, faculty and nursing team.
The program will span eight (8) weeks in length, beginning June 5, 2023 and will be conducted at Hartford Health Care sites. Following successful completion of the program, candidates will be offered per diem, Student Nurse Tech assignments. The Fellowship Program is 40 hours per week for the first 8 weeks, followed by Per Diem assignments after the 8 weeks are completed. The student will be assigned to one of the following sites:

- Nursing student entering their Senior Year
- High level of interest in Critical Care Nursing
- Elevated communication and organizational skills
- Transcripts (3.2 GPA requirement)
- Two letters of recommendation (One from a clinical instructor)
-Essay reflecting interest in a critical care position (750 words maximum)
