Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing will be responsible for the Women’s Health Service line including the Family Birthing Center and Newborn ICU. The Director has primary responsibility for operational and performance standards, nursing practice standards, fiscal management and clinical practice for patient care and service delivery. The Director will collaborate with physician leaders, the management team and relevant clinical and administrative leaders to plan comprehensive Women’s Health programs and ensure that the highest level of quality patient centered care is delivered. Working closely with the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, the Director will improve operating results across the service lines by creating an integrated service line business plan and operational metrics that align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensures quality patient care by setting standards for nursing/patient care that are evidence based for the OB-GYN and infant care specialties, and holding managers and staff accountable for meeting the standards. Provides strategic oversight and management of assigned areas by providing direction to managers and supervisors to evaluate their managerial effectiveness for their assigned areas
  • Creates, presents and integrates service line business and operational plans/metrics which align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives
  • Facilitates continuous performance improvement by encouraging innovation, supporting reasonable risk-taking, being open to new ideas and keeping up to date in the clinical arena. Contributes to continuous performance improvement by participating in quality initiatives and promoting a safe working environment (risk management and safety goals).  Participates in and supports staff in the reliable and valid measurement of outcomes.  Ensures the use of high reliability principles to assure patient and employee safety
  • Creates a thriving, trusting team culture. Provides team with clear expectations, positive and constructive feedback to maximize potential and improve performance. Encourages professional development, identifying opportunities for growth and ongoing education. Promotes and oversees the employment of an effective peer review process relative to evidence based standards
  • Supports the Magnet culture by promoting shared governance/shared decision making within nursing services and across the organization. Identifies cutting edge nursing quality indicators, developmental needs, performance improvement, research initiatives and other activities that sustain and advance a culture of excellence
  • Ensures the alignment of daily operations, delivery of services, staffing and department needs with operational requirements and development goals. Directs all process and productivity improvements for assigned services which may include special projects
  • Ensures compliance with Joint Commission as well as State, Local and Federal regulatory agencies. Consults with recommendations of professional bodies to ensure evidence based practice
  • Participates in the preparation of operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the department leaders; forecasts demand for services and conducts trending analysis. Monitors overall performance of the departments against a pre-defined set of outcomes measures of performance standards- financial, clinical quality and service, and implements programs to close any gap in performance
  • Develops and updates clinical plans addressing: quality improvement, marketing/market share growth and analysis, capital equipment planning; technology assessment plan, revenue issues (payer, capitation), and human resource needs
  • Serves as a role model to staff by continuously demonstrating the organization's H3W leadership behaviors, values and principles, creating and maintaining effective, positive customer service relationships by identifying and ensuring that needs are met, responding appropriately to difficult interactions, and educating the staff on providing an exceptional patient experience
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to leaders and staff; someone who drives clinical performance, evidence-based practices, and compassionate patient centered care. Conduct rounds to assess appropriate patient assignments, evaluate patient care and patient/family satisfaction
  • Links the function to other organization functions by personally participating in work groups and teams, by encouraging staff to participate in cross-organization activities, and by integrating with other functions in order to contribute to the achievement of Hospital-wide results.  Organizes the collection, interpretation and use of credible, accurate and consistent data related to the structure, process and outcomes of practice 


  • Bachelor’s and Master's degrees are required. At least one degree must be in Nursing
  • Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut
  • Professional Certification is preferred
  • Four plus years of progressive leadership experience in an acute care setting is required
  • Five plus years of clinical experience in Women’s Health is required
  • Highly effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communications skills required - both written and verbal
  • Excellent leadership skills. Visible leader with proven ability to coach, mentor and influence
  • Demonstrated success in partnering with physicians to plan, implement and grow clinical programs
