Physician Assistant Role Scope    

The Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute is seeking a Physician Assistant leader in Cardiac Surgery at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and coordinates an advanced level of comprehensive health care of cardiac surgery patients under the leadership of the Chair of Cardiac Surgery for Hartford HealthCare’s Heart & Vascular Institute and the System Cardiac Surgery Lead Physician Assistant. This role specifically oversees the work of the physician assistants in Cardiac Surgery at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and takes a leadership role in overall program development and quality.

  • In addition to the clinical services of a cardiac surgery PA, this role collaborates with the Chair of Cardiac Surgery in facilitating the development, support and management of the PA group within Cardiac Surgery at SVMC.
  • Actively participates with Quality Management in the development and implementation of clinical practices.
  • Monitors competency, documentation and outcomes of care given by Physician Assistants. Identifies ways to facilitate working relationships among all levels of staff to meet patient care requirements.
  • Provides overall clinical supervision, including work assignments, schedules, training and evaluation in accordance with specific, respective departmental policies and procedures.
  • Interviews and recommends hiring of Physician Assistants for Cardiac Surgery at SVMC.
  • Assists with the annual performance evaluations of cardiac surgery APPs and recommends disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Identifies learning needs of staff. Orients new Physician Assistants. Develops department level education, including in-services and teaching materials.
  • Promotes professional development of staff.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to patient care by following established applicable nursing, medical and cardiac surgery standards.
  • Models appropriate judgment in the follow-up of patient care issues, including use of physician, nursing and/or administrative chain of command. Models effective leadership behaviors in the Lead PA role. Facilitates learning for other staff to become more effective in their role. Provides coaching and team building to increase employee productivity and satisfaction. Serves as a resource to staff for problem solving.
  • Actively participates in and leads discussion of quality results and patient feedback, problem solving and development of plans to improve quality of care and service. Follows up and supports efforts of colleagues to implement improvement action plans.
  • Facilitates change to meet organizational goals within the service line. Develops and implements strategies to reduce costs and increase patient satisfaction.
  • Acts as a liaison with nursing, medical staff and quality management.
  • Participating in daily rounds and assisting with implementing management plan in collaboration with multidisciplinary team and attending physician.
  • Ordering and obtaining necessary diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests.  Following through on interpretation of results and communicating with the team and attending physician.
  • 1st and 2nd assisting in the operating room
  • Entering, reviewing, and updating orders in Epic to include: PT, OT, Speech, IV therapy, medications, restraints, consultations from other services, patient care, and discharge orders.
  • Documenting patient encounters in Epic including, but not limited to: admissions, progress, event, consult, procedure, or discharge notes.
  • Admitting patients with the collaborating physician.  Performing and documenting a complete H&P as well as entering appropriate information and orders into Epic.
  • Request consultation from other services, obtain appropriate work up, and follow through on recommendations
  • Addressing patient concerns brought forth by patient family or staff.

 Schedule: Full Time (40 hours) – Rotating Schedule (Days, Nights, Weekends, Holidays), In house call

Advanced Practitioner Qualifications  

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Master’s program
  • Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant in the state of Connecticut
  • Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant.   
  • 5+ years’ experience in cardiovascular surgery preferred
  • First assistant experience, including endoscopic vein harvesting skills preferred
  • EVH experience preferred but NOT required
  • NCCPA certification required
  • ACLS/BLS certification required
