Job Description:

Responsible for day to day operations and prioritizes work flows, within SPS department, on their specific shift. Ensures staff members adhere to SPS policies and standard work while performing their assigned daily tasks. In coordination with SPS Technician 3, provides training and competency validation checks for new staff. Maintains a thorough knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, utilization, and sterile processing. Performs a variety of processing duties at an advanced level, including decontamination, instrument assembly, packaging, sterilization and case cart assembly. Ensures that all required daily documentation is accurate and complete for efficient distribution of high quality sterile products to effectively meet customer expectations. Works in collaboration with peri-operative services to provide appropriate surgical instrumentation. Leads daily shift huddle and maintains Lean Visual Management Board. Participates in quality safety council meetings.

Job Resposibilities: 

  • Schedules/assigns work and resolves processing problems efficiently and effectively, implementing and monitor department goals and objectives within the work group. Implements individual performance expectations, coaches, develops, and provides input to performance evaluations to enable employees to be successful in contributing to the achievement of individual and work group objectives.
  • Carries an assigned workload or fill in as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive customer service relationships by responding to customer needs, resolving conflicts, and educating employees on customer service.  Effectively and continually communicates with the staff, management, and customers to facilitate the flow of information necessary to the success of the employees of the employees and the work group.
  • Uses resources effectively and efficiently, shifting resources to meet changing needs. Participates in budget by monitoring progress within established budget and recommending budget expenditures.
  • Analyzes work unit/department needs and develop recommendations for the work group that aligns with the strategic direction of organization.
  • Is responsible for all areas of instrumentation in specialty areas of Bariatric, Orthopedic, Cardiovascular, Ears Nose and Throat, Laparoscopic and Neuro.
  • Provides daily service specific case cart quality assurance, utilizes the backfill list, creates priority list for next day cases, and maintains process for same day cases to ensure products are ready to meet the requirements of all cases.
  • Independently acts as a resource for the Sterile Processing Services department.  Provides training and development of new and current SPS Technicians.  Independently pulls schedule from EPIC.
  • Provides appropriate instrumentation for surgical procedures ensuring accuracy, proper function, processing and storage and usage according to scheduled and anticipated demand.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage and execute case cart picking function using proper pick sheets, adherence to standard setup, quality assurance and timely delivers of end product.   Utilizes proper forms and procedures to document picking of each item.
  • Retrieves case carts from Operating Room and delivers to the decontamination area.  Retrieves clinical floor sets form Labor and Delivery and all clinical floors.
  • Performs Steam, Sterrad sterilization and is able to disinfect flexible scopes in the Steris unit in a timely and accurate manner ensuring strict adherence to all documented requirements. 
  • Performs decontamination of medical-surgical instrumentation and equipment accordance to department policies, infection prevention guidelines and manufacturer’s written instructions.
  • Efficiently and accurately inspects, assembles, packages and wraps instruments and supplies in preparation and packaging area of Central Sterile Supply according to priority needs and daily assignments.
  • Delivers medical-surgical instruments and supplies to patient care areas and the Operating Room Surgical Suites.  Stocking of linen and clinical floor sets on clinical floors.
  • Adherence to Safety Standards, Blood and Bodily Fluid Precautions and Hand Washing.  Strictly follows the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards including the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards.
  • Takes Inventory on all Clinical Floors and OR and replenishes medical–surgical supplies by par level. 
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent experience

Experience

1+ years of SPS experience

Experience Preferred 

Two (2) years of experience preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

Current "Sterile Processing Distribution Technician Certification" from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Inc. (CBSPD) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from IAHCSMM required.

Language Skills

Ability to read, write and speak English required.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements 

Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Must obtain a minimum of 10 CEU’s (continuous education units) per year.

Working knowledge of SPM, EPIC, and Microsoft Office
