Position Summary:

The Director is responsible for all behavioral health services provided in the Fairfield region including inpatient care, psychiatric emergency services, ambulatory services, and the community support services. The Director will shape and interpret the philosophy and definition of behavioral health care as is relates to patient care, staff development, resource and budget management, staffing, performance improvement and healthcare system utilization.  Working collaboratively with the Department Chair of Psychiatry for St. Vincent’s Medical Center, the Director ensures the achievement of the Behavioral Health Network’s core strategies and operating results.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Participate in strategic planning and program development. Links the function to other organization functions by participating in work groups and teams, by encouraging staff to participate in cross-organization activities, and by integrating with other functions in order to contribute to the achievement of HHC wide results
  • Anticipate and identify evidence-based opportunities for improvement that promote practice and change.  Develop and implement a performance improvement program that focuses on clinical innovation
  • Advocate on behalf of the department to represent the concerns of patients, families and staff. Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to balance technology with values that emphasize quality of life, consumer choice, risk-benefit decisions, access and integrity of life. Provides leadership in creating an ethical practice environment for professional practice
  • Function as a facilitator of learning by modifying, developing and evaluating program-based education programs, monitoring the learning needs of staff and designing educational opportunities to enhance the knowledge and skills of staff. Ensure that all staff members maintain level of competency-based practice based on patient population
  • Responsible for preparing and adhering to departmental budgets and responding to all applicable administrative timeframes. Identifies and implements appropriate cost containment measures
  • Assist in the coordination of patient care conferences, interdisciplinary rounding, patient family needs and interagency collaboration
  • Recognize, respond and follow-up on all issues, concerns and suggestions on behalf of the patient population and staff. Provide timely follow-up on critical incidents and provide leadership in system redesign to promote a culture of safety
  • Develop regional goals to support behavioral health objectives and priorities. Consult with the Vice President of Operations and others to coordinate behavioral health activities with other hospital initiatives
  • Lead and participate in departmental and hospital programs, committees, and special projects to achieve desired outcomes. Work with community agencies to optimize population health planning

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Nursing or similar area required
  • Ten plus years of experience working with a behavioral health population
  • Five plus years in a leadership position in a behavioral health setting
  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization
  • A creative, forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders
