Position Summary:

The System Director for Oncology Pharmacy will provide the vision, leadership and oversight of the medication use process to ensure safety and efficiency spanning all locations under Hartford HealthCare’s Cancer Institute. The System Director provides leadership for all oncology pharmacy programs including patient care services for both inpatient and outpatient care, clinical consultative services, investigational research, academic training and business affairs of the oncology pharmacy service line. In addition, the System Director will establish collaborative relationships with Senior Pharmacy Leadership, Cancer Institute leadership, medical and nursing staff and department heads to optimize all aspects of the medication management process.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Collaborates with the Senior Vice President of Operations for the Cancer Institute in the strategic growth of the cancer service line as it pertains to pharmacy practice
  • Provides leadership in the development and mentoring of all department management teams and oversight of training and residency programs within the Oncology Pharmacy service line
  • Provides operational leadership and support to current and expanding oncology pharmacy services throughout the Hartford HealthCare System
  • Provides leadership and oversight of the design and operation of the medication use process to ensure safety and efficiency for cancer patients. This includes patient research protocols (Phase I, 2 and 3 clinical trials) including storage requirements
  • Ensures that all medication procurement, storage, inventory, labeling, dispensing, administration and disposal of pharmaceuticals ensures a safe process and per regulatory requirements
  • Evaluates all aspects of oncology pharmacy operations with the goal of delivering cost efficient care and to advance the practice of pharmacy to Best Practice
  • Sets the strategic vision and provides leadership for the development of an integrated and patient centric clinical oncology pharmacy care model
  • Serve as the lead pharmacy representative on relevant HHC Cancer Institute committees, sub-committees, and pillars. Ensures broad coverage by the oncology pharmacy team
  • Facilitates Oncology subcommittee of Pharmacy and Therapeutics Council
  • Assess and revise clinical oncology related medications policies for oncology pharmacy. Provides support of implementation of oncology policies throughout system. Develops and implements staff programs that address continuous quality improvement, competency assessment and other programs as needed
  • Develop quality metrics related to Oncology and Infusion practice. Ensures that the pharmaceutical care is safe and consistent with existing regulations of The Joint Commission, Connecticut DPH and DCP, and existing state and federal law
  • Provides direct oversight of the pharmacy Investigational Drug Service (IDS)
  • Support system pharmacoeconomic efforts as related to oncology medications
  • Manages the financial and business aspects of oncology pharmacy budget. Analyzes monthly expenditures, variances and trends and their impact on departmental budget. Recommends plans and programs to control drug expenditures and enhance revenue
  • Represents Hartford HealthCare and Cancer Institute on local, regional and national committees to support institutional visibility and national presence. Examples include ASHP, Vizient, ASCO, NCCN, HOPA and other national organizations
  • Provides leadership and oversight of all clinical oncology services including: Integrated patient centric oncology care model, OCM (Oncology Care Model), VIA Oncology clinical pathway, Pharmacist managed anticoagulation service, collaborative practice initiatives and P&T Committee support

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy is required
  • Five plus years of post-graduate experience in a healthcare system is required
  • Three plus years of clinical oncology pharmacy experience is required
  • Three plus years of leadership experience
  • Unrestricted pharmacist license from Connecticut Board of  Pharmacy or eligibility within 45 days from hire
  • Experience leading evidence-based clinical decision-making about drug use, physician prescribing habits, medication management systems, medication policy and the technology used to deliver and support patient care
  • Clinically astute regarding drugs, reimbursement, billing and regulatory issues
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and developing people and programs
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills; strong presentation skills, able to write detailed policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and responsibilities, collaborate with multiple stakeholders and develop consensus
  • Strong understanding of lean and quality improvement concepts
