The Hospital of Central Connecticut is an acute-care community teaching hospital, we provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services in general medicine and surgery, as well as a wide variety of specialties. The Emergency Department Social Worker plans, organizes, and implements social work services to patients and their families to assist them in meeting social and emotional problems arising in connection with an illness or hospitalization. These social work services may be provided through the medium of individual case work, group work, family work, or crisis intervention.

The Social Worker establishes and maintains working relationships with the health care team and community agencies, has a working knowledge of community and financial resources, and assists with appropriate agency referrals and discharge planning as needed.

Provides direct case work services to patients and their families to help with personal and social problems precipitated by illness or hospitalization.
Provides psycho-therapeutic intervention for emotional problems created by illness and hospitalization.
Aids the patient in understanding and making adjustments in life style necessitated by their medical condition.
Arranges for patient/family conferences to promote inter-familial understanding of and participation in the treatment plan.
Interprets the medical culture the patient is experiencing and guides him/her through the complexities of the system, also assisting with concrete needs and services.
Provides psychosocial information to medical personnel to make them aware of factors in the patient's personal and environmental systems that affects the patient's response to the medical situation and treatment plan.
Provide financial counseling to assist the patient in availing himself to all entitlement.
Provides assistance in stabilize a patient's social environment to assure proper after care and continuity of care plan.
Performs other related duties as assigned or necessary


Master's degree from an accredited school of social work and LCSW

Knowledge of the principles of social casework and human behavior.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of cultural traits, ethnic mores, social trends, social legislation and community resources.
Experience in a hospital or medical setting preferred.
At least one year of casework experience strongly preferred.
Experience in the specialty areas towards which position is focused is desirable.
Ability to establish rapport in order to successfully interview and gather necessary information.
Ability to relate to all people, to be emphatic, without over identification.
Ability to make accurate assessments, identify needs, clarify choices and assist in pursuing a treatment plan.
Ability to communicate clearly and accurately.
Demonstrates age specific competency.
