Position Summary:

The Vice President of Contracting and Payer Relations is accountable for all aspects of fee for service and fee for value contracting including strategy, analytics, negotiation, papering and contract implementation for a $4.3B healthcare system with additional responsibility for payer relations and physician relations. The Vice President will lead negotiations with the top market payers all while simultaneously navigating the very complex transition from fee for service models of payment to value based reimbursement methodologies. The Vice President will partner with the Contract Analytics Team and the Health Economics Team to ensure all decisions are data driven and collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure contract strategy is in alignment with system strategy. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Collaborate with Hartford HealthCare Executive Leadership to set both fee for service and value based contracting strategy
  • Lead negotiations with top market payers ensuring both financial and non-financial objectives are achieved
  • Develop and implement the strategy for moving from fee for service to fee for value contracting for the system
  • Maintain relationships at various levels with external payers and leverage these relationships in order to expeditiously resolve issues for the system
  • Develop effective working relationships with various departments within the organization including but not limited to:  finance, legal, patient financial services, revenue cycle, hospital and ancillary leadership and clinical departments in order to solicit their input and/or their buy in on contract strategy
  • Play a lead role in providing market and business information to assist in the decision making process of the ICP and HHC leadership teams
  • Establish credibility with ICP physicians
  • Ensure goals are achieved by hiring qualified staff, developing existing staff and managing performance/Champion a culture that emphasizes collaboration, accountability and performance improvement with a shared vision of excellence and a zeal for innovation       


  • Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Ten plus years of experience in a managed care environment with comprehensive knowledge of hospital, physician and ancillary contracting as well as value based contracting and management
  • Strong analytic capabilities including the ability to quantify the short term and long term value of contract asks
  • Demonstrated success in negotiating managed care contracts in competitive markets
  • Experience negotiating alternative payment models including capitation and episodes of care/bundles
  • Seasoned manager passionate about staff development and growth
  • Advanced understanding of managed care legal principles and contract language.  Ensures contract language supports HHC short term and long term objectives and protects system viability
  • Super communicator with the ability to effectively interact with varied audiences and build rapport
  • System Thinker who is capable of visualizing the linkages between component parts of the whole and “connecting the dots” that lead to the desired outcome
