Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a 122-bed, general acute care community hospital located in Torrington, Connecticut, that serves as a regional health care resource for the 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut.  CHH offers personalized attention from an expert team of caregivers and physicians that utilize advanced technology and clinical partnerships in a convenient, safe and comfortable patient environment.

 

POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The incumbents for this position must have diverse responsibilities related to the admissions/registration process.  Responsibilities include, but, are not limited to:  pre-certification/eligibility process, obtaining/verifying authorizations and referrals, patient reception and order processing, collecting patient financial and demographic information, direct contact with insurance carriers, third party payers, patients, family members, doctor’s offices, and other involved parties, and as appropriate, counseling and assisting patients in reaching appropriate means of payment.   This position is capable of covering all areas of registration throughout the organization.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Prepares pre-admission and registration forms, reviews all hospital registrations to ensure accurate financial and demographic data and documentation have been obtained and properly entered into the hospital records/information system.  Performs eligibility checking using the current system, and is accountable for following up on the verification process.  Ensures that all information for processing the patients visit is collected; missing/incomplete information is followed up on, and audit reports are routinely run.

 

 

  1. Meets with patient and/or family members at point of registration to collect and record accurate patient/financial information.    Distributes paperwork and obtains all necessary signatures as part of the registration process.  Assures presence of valid physician order form and registers patients for the exam/procedure in a timely manner.  During the process of registration, completes any necessary questionnaire required by law, regulations and/or policies and procedures.

 

  1. Collects appropriate copays and open balances; keeps updated on, and correctly applies the appropriate discounts.  Posts payments accurately in both Meditech and Passport and prints receipts.  Responsible for balancing collections at the end of the shift.

 

  1. Documents and scans all necessary paperwork.  Acts as liaison between patient/family members and the financial counselor or social services; refers patient when appropriate.

 

  1. Reviews and verifies selected insurance benefits assigned to the hospital to determine if insurance coverage meets the standards of admission/visit; verifies that all necessary pre-certifications, authorizations, and referrals are obtained.

 

  1. Receives and assists patients with any questions they may have regarding their visit; provides a pleasant environment for patients, families, and visitors.  Responsible for hospital “sign-in” and directs patients to the appropriate area.  Checks in scheduled patients and reviews patient’s packet for completion.

 

  1. Where applicable, the incumbent is responsible for the timely and accurate input of orders using appropriate Meditech module.  Performs medical necessity checks and distributes and explains any necessary ABN’S; follows up with physician offices for missing/incomplete information.

 

  1. Maintains and fosters effective public relations with patients and public; effective customer service skills and protection of confidential information are of the highest importance.

 

  1. Communicates/documents all applicable patient financial information necessary for billing/collections and all other departments as needed.

 

 

  1. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to stay current on the latest trends in field of expertise.  Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings to maintain competencies.

 

  1. Complies with Hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, attendance, sexual harassment, dress code, corporate compliance, confidentiality and others.

  1. Pre-registers patients from the CHH Multi-disciplinary group as needed.

  1. Performs other related functions within the scope of responsibilities.

 

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIREMENTS, AND DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology

Qualifications

EDUCATION/CERTFICIATION

  • High school Diploma or equivalent required

     

EXPERIENCE   

  • Two or more year’s job related experience in a medical customer service setting.  Meditech experience. 
  • One year of job related experience and basic knowledge of computer operations.
