Job Summary

Plans, develops, and coordinates all recreation activities for residential clients, contributing to a therapeutic environment that supports the achievement of client’s treatment goals & objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Plans and implements daily recreational activities that are safe, appropriate, diverse, therapeutic, and representative of the interests of the residents.  Coordinates and supervises recreational activities run by line staff.
  2. In conjunction with the Residential Coordinator develops and updates weekend schedule on a weekly basis, organizes and implements holiday activities, and develops and implements a summer schedule.   
  3. Provides timely and accurate recommendations to the annual budget and controls expenses to the approved recreation portion of the budget.
  4. Provides support and education to line staff who are involved in conducting or participating in recreational activities.  Ensures that line staff are aware of clients’ goals and objectives in recreational activities.
  5. Maintains regular communication with clinicians regarding the development of recreation-specific objectives to be included in monthly treatment plans.  Provides clinicians with reports of progress on objectives and revises objectives as needed to meet client’s needs.  Provides feedback on progress in recreational therapy to be used in Monthly Treatment Plan Progress Reports (MTPPR) submitted to CTBHP.
  6. Organizes and implements intramural sports program with other residential facilities.
  7. Serves as liaison between Rushford Academy and outside agencies, such as the YMCA, Lion’s Den, High Hopes Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Prime Climb, and Empower Leadership Sports.
  8. Attends weekly clinical rounds, monthly treatment plan meetings for each client, and other meetings as requested by the Clinical Manager or Residential Coordinator.
  9. Completes PNMI-compliant recreational therapy notes for each client that meet the standards stated in the treatment plans.
  10. Organizes and facilitates the Venture Scouts program.  Serves as a liaison between Rushford Academy and the Boy Scouts of America. Monitors fundraising activities and controls funds generated from these activities.
  11. Organizes volunteering program and keeps track of volunteering hours for each client.  Serves as liaison between Rushford Academy and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Meriden Humane Society, and St. Vincent dePaul soup kitchen. 
  12. Actively participates in discharge planning process for each client, helping to identifying community resources that can be utilized by the client post-discharge.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation preferred. Will consider individual with skills normally acquired through attainment of a four-year degree in social sciences.
  • Must possess and maintain PSL, CPR/First Aid Certification and agency restraint certification.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in service to children and in recreation.
