For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.
In addition to our 200+ bed hospital, the Backus Health System includes numerous off-site locations, including several health centers, Backus Home Health Care and the Backus Outpatient Care Center, also in Norwich. We have additional facilities in Norwich, Colchester, Norwichtown and Waterford.
We’re seeking a caring and dedicated Physical Therapist (PT) leader to join our new outpatient office in Mystic, CT. This new, state-of-the art location is part of Backus Hospital’s outpatient team and is close to the beautiful Connecticut shoreline and beaches!
In this leadership position, you will collaborate with motivated and energetic rehabilitation team. Opportunity for continuum of care and best practice creation for different patient populations. In addition, you will have an opportunity to collaborate with the inpatient rehab and Occupational Health departments at Backus Hospital and develop relationships with colleagues in area. Position reports to Area Manager & Regional Director.
Specialty programs include musculoskeletal disorders, neurologic and movement disorders, sports medicine, safe steps- balance/fall prevention, headache management, bariatric rehab, vestibular, work injury rehab, McKenzie therapy techniques and more!
Position is Monday-Friday, full time, 40 hours/week, with some evenings required until 7pm. This is a treating/management position. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, position ensures that high quality, cost effective services are delivered in support of the organizations strategic plan, goals and objectives.
Responsible for supervision of the overall daily operations, coordination, and delivery of direct and indirect outpatient care.
Supervision of all outpatient staff and considerable decision making authority concerning daily activities of the clinic, including providing recommendations for department policy change.
Establishing performance expectations; coaching, developing, and evaluating performance to enable employees to be successful in contributing to the achievement of individual and department objectives. Informing and advising superior on hiring and disciplinary actions.
Provides safe and appropriate patient evaluations treatments and documentation.
Requires the ability to exercise discretion and use of good judgment to perform duties promptly and consistently with little direction.
Contributing to the development of meaningful goals and objectives for the department that align with the strategic direction of the organization by analyzing needs and developing recommendations. Communicating the goals and objectives to the staff and monitors progress during the year.
Contributing to the efficient operation of the unit by establishing priorities, eliminating impediments, and resolving problems. Continually striving to improve the quality and productivity of the department by establishing priorities, monitoring performance measurements, identifying and recommending improvement opportunities, and eliminating obstacles.
Actively seeking opportunities to model teamwork through collaboration both within and outside the department in support of the organization's objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
Working knowledge of the State Practice Acts for therapists, Federal Medicaid and Medicare regulations. Thorough knowledge and application of therapy principles and practices. Proven leadership ability to develop and mentor staff. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with employees, departments, physicians and managers. Ability to work collaboratively with all healthcare providers. Good time management skills. Strong commitment to customer service. Works efficiently and organizes time appropriately. Ability to prioritize daily work assignments. Must be flexible, a team player and able to work efficiently in a hectic work environment. Proficient skills in windows based software.
