St. Vincent’s Medical Center, with more than 3,200 colleagues, is a 473-bed community teaching hospital having a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group and St. Vincent’s Special Needs Services. St. Vincent's Medical Center is committed to exceptional health care for all with special attention to persons living in poverty and those who are most vulnerable. St. Vincent’s is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system’s second-largest hospital.

 

 

Position Summary:

The Vice President of Operations, under the direction of the President and in collaboration with the executive team, will provide leadership and direction for the operations of the region while furthering the mission, vision and values of Hartford HealthCare.  The Vice President will align operational performance with the goals and objectives of the system and add value by ensuring strong operations management while demonstrating a keen focus on performance improvement, safety, service excellence and cost management.  

 

 

Key Accountabilities:

 

  • Oversees current day-to-day operations, future growth and program development for the region, while ensuring responsible stewardship of human, fiscal and physical resources.
  • Supports achievement of balanced scorecard goals for the region and assures that the strategies and tactics are aligned with the goals and priorities of Hartford HealthCare as a whole.
  • Manages assigned departments efficiently and effectively to maximize quality of services, customer and staff experience and revenue generation.
  • Manages leaders implementing multiple million dollar construction projects to ensure projects meet strategic objectives and budget expectations.
  • Identifies and implements innovative services and solutions that improve operational budget performance through growth opportunities and thoughtful expense reductions that create value for the community and reduce cost for the customer.
  • Builds strategic partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies.  Engages key stakeholders through transparent communication and effective relationship building.
  • Fosters strong relationships with both hospital-based and community physicians to meet and exceed operating objectives.  Serves as a role model for physician engagement by cultivating honest and transparent communication with medical staff.
  • Takes leadership role in managing regional productivity to ensure labor resources match volume for the financial health of the organization.
  • Motivates, coaches and develops employees to highest performance using effective management practices, including the commitment to and demonstration of Hartford HealthCare’s Leadership Behaviors.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations as well as all policies and procedures set forth by Hartford HealthCare, the Board of Directors, and the Medical Staff.
  • Participates on various Hartford HealthCare, Board and Medical Staff committees and functions.
  • Supports cultural diversity by ensuring that the delivery of quality and culturally competent, patient-centered care is provided; and promoting and maintaining an inclusive work environment and culture that is respectful and accepting of diversity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s Degree in Health Care, Management or Business Administration or other closely related field is required.
  • Eight plus years of progressive healthcare operations experience with demonstrated competency is required. Five plus years in an equivalent position in a multi-hospital environment is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of healthcare delivery and reimbursement models and dynamics, including service delivery, operations, finance, quality measurement, and improvement.
  • Ability to proactively identify organization issues, and lead collaboratively and decisively in addressing and bringing resolution to issues.
  • Proficient in working within a highly matrixed organization, demonstrating past capabilities of delivering excellent operational results in a similar environment.
  • Ability to develop and foster effective collaboration between departments, service lines, physicians and other partners to meet goals and objectives.  Must possess deep knowledge of physicians and physician environments and be a role model for physician relationships.
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and engage employees and other key stakeholder groups.
  • Track record of success in leading strong financial and operational outcomes in a metrics-driven environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation and public speaking skills.
  • Big picture thinker who supports integration and embraces change.
