St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. Job Summary:

Develops, coordinates, and instructs fitness and strengthening programs and events for Ayer Neuroscience Institute Spine Wellness Center.  Serves as a strengthening and fitness trainer; assesses and establishes individualized and group training programs for clients.  Reports to the Fitness Center Manager or Rehab Site Supervisor.  Assists rehabilitation team with patient care, education, and supporting activities.  Supports programming and functions of wellness team, wellness navigator, and demonstration kitchen.  Oversees fitness program and coordinates rehab maintenance program.  Cultivates relationships with local schools, businesses, and community groups to support HHCRN’s programs and strategic growth. Collaborates with rehab and wellness team under the direction of site supervisor to develop and grow fitness programs, training programs, and group classes for HHCRN.


Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with rehab, wellness, and nutrition team, develop and modify fitness programming and group classes to maintain high quality care standards and cohesive programming. Develop, support, and direct client and employee fitness and wellness programs.   Instruct clients in muscle strengthening and general conditioning exercises.  Teach group fitness classes.  Monitor client’s response to exercise intervention and report to appropriate medical personnel as indicated.  Evaluate and identify equipment needs for exercise programming. Ensure equipment is kept clean and maintained as needed, and is sanitized between use to maintain a clean and safe environment of care. Offer support and assistance to rehab team.  

  • Cultivate relationships with rehab clients to support internal referrals and efficient transition into long term fitness programs and classes offered by HHCRN.  Recruit clients and community members to participate in group and individual exercise programs.  Identify fitness program members who may benefit from referral to other HHC services and levels of care.    

  • Assess clients referred to muscle strengthening program by gathering baseline data, which will be used for progression of exercise and measuring successful outcomes.  Confer formally or informally with other team members to coordinate services.  Maintain appropriate records pertaining to fitness strengthening program.  Gather and organize outcomes data to be used for Continuous Quality Improvement. 



Qualifications

Required Credential(s):

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology or related field


Experience

3 years of experience working with geriatric population 


Licensure, Certification, Registration:  Certification from one or more professional organization:  American Academy of Health and Fitness Professionals, National Strength and Conditioning Association, or American College of Sports Medicine

Language Skills

Proficiency in English language - both spoken and written.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to move at least 75 lbs. without assistance
  • Physically able to bend, reach and work in small areas
  • Physically able to push and pull equipment to maintain clean, safe workspace
  • Physically able to stand for long periods of time
  • Lead exercise classes and demonstrate fitness activities such as physioball training, abdominal  training, free weights, plyometric, and balance training, etc.
