Position Summary:

The Administrative Director of Behavioral Health has responsibility for the planning, management and oversight of all behavioral health services at both Backus and Windham Hospitals. These services include Inpatient Care, Ambulatory Services, Consultation/Liaison and Emergency Services. The Director is a member of the leadership team and works collaboratively with Medical Director and Director of Nursing to identify opportunities for growth and operationalize those initiatives.



Key Accountabilities:


  • Work with Program Managers in the development and expansion of program services; help to identify market opportunities and steer the process towards pursuit of market goals and opportunities
  • Serve as a resource to the executive team, management team and medical leadership of the hospitals to help reduce costs, enhance revenues, achieve effective utilization, and quality goals and objectives, and analyze and utilize information to develop and support management decisions
  • Develop and foster a recovery-oriented system of care that aligns with High Reliability Safety principles and processes
  • Develop and foster effective collaboration between clinical departments, divisions, medical staff leadership, faculty and other affiliated services (inside and outside of the hospitals) to ensure an integrated approach to providing services, and fulfilling the hospital’s Inpatient and Ambulatory goals and objectives
  • Responsible for managing budget within established guidelines; including allocation of resources, overtime utilization and approval
  • Ensure that standards of efficiency of intake and service provision are met to maximize revenue and achieve budget goals
  • Provide leadership and management for direct reports, including staff training and development, allocation of staffing resources, work flow management, performance monitoring, pro-active problem resolution and corrective action when necessary, in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Oversee the processes to ensure that client records are timely and through so that the interests of the Hospital are protected, incidents are well documents and reported according to Joint Commission, DCF and other regulatory guidelines
  • Ensure that systems are in place so the programs meet relevant licensing and accreditation standards
  • Monitor and report key quality improvement indicators and develops strategies for attaining Quality Improvement goals.  Design, oversee and participate in Quality Improvement activities
  • Achieve goals for revenue cycle performance and for the overall financial performance.  Oversee authorization denial and collection processes to ensure maximization of revenue and to ensure clients receive appropriate clinical services




  • Master's Degree in behavioral health is required
  • Ten plus years of experience working with a behavioral health population
  • Five plus years in a leadership position
  • Current CT licensure as a LCSW, LMFT, LPC, LADC, APRN, RN or psychologist
  • Experience with chemical dependency population preferred
  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization
  • A creative, forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders
