Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing ensures the achievement of Ambulatory Care’s core strategies and operating results by providing collaborative leadership across Hartford Hospital and oversees the full continuum of care for the following services: Adult Primary Care, Community Care Clinic, Specialty Clinic, Diabetes Life Care and Dental Clinic.  The Director of Nursing works collaboratively with other disciplines and departments to ensure that programs are well planned and that services are fully integrated to ensure a patient-centered, outcome driven approach to care. As a champion of the Hartford Healthcare culture, the Nurse Director espouses, practices and reinforces the safety culture expectations which are a top priority in leadership decision-making.



Key Accountabilities:

  • Maintains effective relationships with clinic staff, leadership, providers and other care team members, and executive leadership for the purpose of aligning primary care goals and health system goals that address the health of the population
  • Facilitates continuous performance improvement by encouraging innovation, supporting reasonable risk-taking, being open to new ideas and providing ongoing monitoring of program development and services.  Defines performance objectives and metrics for the clinic sites in collaboration with physician practice leadership and provides ongoing monitoring of performance
  • Provide strategic planning, program planning and development driven via a project based process. Contributes to care improvement by participating in performance/quality improvement opportunities.  Using reliable and valid tools and processes, evaluates the outcome of service (and decisions made) to established standards, policies, procedures, goals and the like
  • Promotes Ambulatory Clinical Quality Improvement and Patient Safety with the use of high reliability principles to assure promotion of a safe working environment per risk management and safety goals. Serve as a part of the leadership team that address patient and staff safety events. Organize and conduct systematic responses to identified safety issues
  • Implements the Performance Improvement and Re-design of ambulatory units operations with practices such as: Clinical rounding, Ambulatory Care Excellence Executive Committee, Effective Peer review relative to evidence based standards
  • Provides financial management expertise for strategic planning, budgeting, analysis and decision-making. Acts as a liaison with other hospital facilities leadership to meet the financial management information needs by preparing and/or examining various financial and non-financial reports and analyzing the impact of actual and/or proposed operational changes in meeting HHC/HH initiatives. Identify resources required to achieve operating results and advocating for them during resource allocation
  • Develops community partnerships that include formal and informal, local and global, community connections, collaborative projects, nurse volunteerism, and relationships that advance / enhance service excellence through these partnerships
  • Facilitates the effective utilization of resources (people, financial, material) by understanding how the service links to the organization's core strategies and translating the linkage into operational priorities.  When applicable, articulates to others a clear rationale for research based decisions and actions
  • Serves as a role model to staff by continuously demonstrating the organization's H3W leadership behaviors, values and principles, creating and maintaining effective, positive customer service relationships by identifying customers and their needs, ensuring that needs are met, responding  appropriately to difficult interactions, and educating the staff on the importance of quality customer service
  • Collaborates and consults with peers and colleagues by defining how function standards translate into usable applications and/or care patterns, and by negotiating with peers and colleagues to develop mutually workable solutions in order to ensure consistency and continuity of functional application across the organization


  • Bachelor's Degree in related field and Master's Degree is required. One degree must be in nursing. Masters in Nursing or Public Health preferred
  • Current Registered Nurse license in CT
  • Five plus years of progressive nursing leadership.  Demonstrated track record as an effective administrator who has created change
  • Two plus years of leadership experience in an Ambulatory or Community Based Organization required
  • Experience working with LEAN principles to engineer positive outcomes
  • Experience with health, social determinants of health and/or related issues in an Ambulatory Healthcare setting preferred
  • The ability to work with diverse groups of physicians (voluntary/full-time, teaching/nonteaching) and appreciate their contributions to the strategic direction of an organization
  • Intellectually facile, will have the ability to be conceptually creative, grasp large amounts of information quickly, and articulate conclusions in a clear manner
  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization
  • A creative, forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders
  • A demonstrated track record designing strategies and delivering solutions in areas including, but not limited to, patient experience, patient safety, employee engagement and workflow redesign
