Job Summary:

The Patient Transporter is responsible for facilitating the movement of patients and equipment’s within the department, nursing units and other areas throughout the hospital.

As a member of the Patient Transport Team, the orderly performs a variety of multi-skilled services house wide including direct patient care and transport. Works under the supervision of The Patient Transport Management team, and contributes to meeting the health care, safety, and comfort needs of the patient, and follows all existing regulatory and hospital standards.

 

Ensures patient’s comfort and safety using proper mode of transportation and considering patient’s condition.

 

Sanitize and wash hands before/after entering a patient’s room, test sites, exchanging linen, any contact with labs/specimens and before/after gloves removal.

 

Utilizes correct body mechanics when moving / transporting patients.

 

Cross references information dispatched / received with patient’s chart, room number and patient’s identification band.

 

 Informs transport delays greater than 5-10 minutes and obtains authorization when transport is cancelled.

 

Assures a nurse is present to execute proper handling of chest tubes for transport.  Assures Staff Nurse disconnects the nasogastric (NG) tube and Oxygen.

 

Communicates to the nursing staff and all information pertaining to patient’s condition before, during and after patient’s transport.

 

Transports patient’s chart with the patient as needed.

 

Performs cadaver transport to the morgue.

 

Transport blood products, code carts, CPR machine, labs, specimens, instruments and Oxygen tanks.

 

Identifies locations of all departments, nursing units and testing area within the Hospital.

 

Gathers equipment and necessary supplies prior to transporting the patient as dispatched by the dispatcher’s.

 

Transfers patient from stretcher, or wheelchair to bed etc., following proper infection control and body mechanic procedures. Cover patient’s and ensures call button, phone, T.V. controls etc, are within patients reach. 

 

Transports patient to destinations following HOCC rules and procedures.

 

Replaces linen on stretchers and collects clean linen for each patient.

 

Reports immediate completion of assignments using hand held device.

 

Attends all required meetings and in-services

 

Responsible for moving unused stretchers, wheelchairs and other medical equipment as needed.

 

Maintains cleanliness and service ability of transport equipment: (1) Cleans stretchers, wheelchairs, etc. according to established infection control guidelines, (2) Reports repair needs upon discovery.  Removes damaged/unsafe equipment from usage, (3) Disposes of soiled linen properly after each patient transport, (4) Returns all equipment to proper location at the end of shift.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Requirements
HS Diploma/GED.


Minimum Requirements
Exemplary customer service.
Ability to communicate and understand directions.
Basic computer skills.
Previous experience in a medical setting is preferred.
