Job Description:

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the lab assistant is responsible for support functions, preanalytical processing, preparing specimens to send to appropriate reference laboratories and accessioning/ registration functions.

As a Laboratory Assistant for the Special Heme department, you are play a vital role in keeping the laboratory together- you are essentially the missing piece to the puzzle in the department. Each day is never the same! As the laboratory is constantly developing and producing a higher workload, so will your tasks. You will work together with a team of amazing techs that are doing complex testing in order to provide results to ordering providers in an efficient manner . There will be tasks that are done daily, such as stocking laboratory supplies and accessioning, as well as tasks that are completed as necessary- such as reagents. There may also new tasks that are created due to the increase in workflow. Flexibility is key. Laboratory experience is important because it allows you to understand the "why" throughout your training- why you are making reagents, why these tests are necessary for patient treatment, etc.

 

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • 1 year of experience in a laboratory, medical or other related setting OR any experience or training that supports minimum training for the duties above
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal, written and listening) skills and good leadership abilities.
  • Ability to comply with OSHA and applicable regulatory requirements by following established procedures in order to maintain a safe laboratory environment and to meet accreditation standards.
  • Ability to be flexible as required to adapt to laboratory needs as related to testing and scheduling.
