Job Schedule: Full TimeThe Emergency Department at Hartford Hospital is responsible for treating a wide variety of patients, from basic ailments to the most complex traumas, at our Level-I Trauma Center. This unit has some the highest acuity in the region, requiring our nurses to think and act quickly to meet the varying needs of our patients. Comprised of 109 beds, the unit is subdivided into different pods, including the Purple Pod for Behavioral Health patients and Red Pod for the most severe cases. We are also a primary stroke and cardiac center. Successful healthcare providers on this unit are highly skilled, agile and resilient; with the ability to work together to make sure we have a safe environment and provide the highest level of satisfaction to our staff and patients.

Job Summary
Under limited supervision, a Comfort Associate administers comfort measures to patients and their families. Interacts with patients and families by circulating and remaining abreast of patient location and progress. Provides timely information and support to patients and family members with a primary focus on tracking and monitoring patient/family satisfaction, identifying patient/family concerns, responding to special needs and bringing them to the attention of appropriate staff.
Key Areas of Responsibility
1. Welcomes patients and families to the area by orienting them to their room and offering explanation of department processes and patient guidelines.
2. Visits and provides companionship to patients. Explains patient journals and provides logistical explanations to patients and families; provides reading material, pillows and blankets to patients, ensures call bell is within patient’s reach and assists with other patient and family comfort requests.
3. Provides nourishment including coffee, water, ice and refreshments (with approval from nurse) to patients and their families, and ensures nourishment supplies are stocked in all kitchens.
4. Responsible for maintenance of items used for comfort, including stocking blanket warmers, placing pillow cases on all pillows, etc.
5. Provides key information obtained by the patient and family and shares with the nursing staff and manager in a timely manner.
6. Possesses the ability to follow policies and procedures to maintain quality, safety and/or infections-control standards within the department and facility.
