Job Summary

The Operating Room Aid (ORA) works under the direct supervision of the OR Nurse Manager and/or other medical staff as designated. This role is responsible for the preparation and breakdown of the operating room (OR). This position also assists in transporting patients to and from the OR, assembling surgical beds, and stocking supplies. Additionally, the ORA has frequent exposure to moderate to heavy physical activity such as pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, reaching and bending requiring exertions of 20-50 lbs. of force. Constant mobility must be expected as part of the position.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the control of infection by understanding and applying the principles of terminal cleaning according to policy and procedure after each surgical case. Uses supplies appropriately and curtails waste, daily.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the ORs, the OR equipment, and with keeping rooms prepared for surgery. Cleans/disinfects patient use items using terminal methods and according to procedure.
  • Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the O.R.  Uses a pleasant tone of voice. Treats the people we serve as guests.
  • Moves patients using proper body mechanics and assists appropriate personnel in this task.

  • Handles specimens properly using knowledge and understanding of O.R. specimen policy.

  • Participates in activities designed to increase knowledge and contributes to the productivity and efficient operation of the department. Seeks ways to sustain and improve one's skills on a continual basis.

  • Adheres to universal precautions, blood and body fluid precautions, and hand washing. Strictly follows Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses standards (AORN).
  • Respects the privacy and confidentiality of patient's, visitors and staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • None

Experience :

  • No experience necessary, willing to train qualified candidates.

Experience Preferred:

  • Hospital Housekeeping/Transport experience preferred

Education:

  •  High School diploma or equivalent experience

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements 

·        Must be able to lift 20-50lbs using appropriate lifting techniques.

·        Must be able to transport patients

·        Must have basic housekeeping knowledge.

·        Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

·        Ability to lean and follow all policies, procedures, techniques and protocols.

·        Ability to learn and apply the proper handling of specimens.

·        Strong communication skills.

·        Strong ability to demonstrate compassion when dealing with patients.

·        Must have the ability to take direction and follow through on assignments without reminder.

·        Ability to prioritize assignments and tasks.

·        Must be able to work in a fast paced, highly technical environment.

·        Ability to be flexible with schedule
