For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.
JOB SUMMARY Performs minor carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and electrical repairs and maintenance to insure safe, efficient and proper functioning of these devices and systems in the main Hospital campus and off-site facilities. Responds to emergencies as necessary and may be required to provide unrestricted on call coverage as emergency situations dictate.
Qualifications
Education: Technical school graduate in a mechanical discipline or high school graduate with equivalent technical experience and strong mechanical aptitude. Specialized training in a mechanical/electrical discipline such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing or HVAC preferred.
Experience: One (1) to two (2) years mechanical maintenance experience.
License and Certification: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry or HVAC. Basic diagnostic capabilities with ability to work within the limitations of the position. Basic blueprint reading and ability to read and understand maintenance manuals. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Works efficiently and organizes time appropriately. Basic computer proficiency to enter and retrieve data.

Work is performed in accordance with instructions and procedures, but incumbents must organize the work and set priorities. Requires the ability to recognize problem situations and refer them to the appropriate staff member.
