St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. St. Vincent’s is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system’s second-largest hospital.

Summary:

The Nurse Educator is responsible for functioning within the context and framework of the Nursing Professional Development, Scope and Standards practice as approved by the American Nurses Association. This position works in partnership with nursing leadership and consults and collaborates with the healthcare team to facilitate training education and development by assessing, planning, implementing coordinating and evaluating projects and programs for staff, faculty, patient populations and the community. This position is an essential member of the nursing leadership team.

The specialized professional nursing practice at St Vincent’s Medical Center facilitates professional role competence and professional growth of learners in a variety of settings; supports lifelong learning; utilizes tools, theories, skills and knowledge to improve healthcare practice for all learners. (Nursing Professional Development:  Scope and Standards of Practice (harper & Maloney, 2016)).

Responsibilities:

  • Assesses learning needs based on regulatory requirements, evidence based practice and individual identified needs. Utilizes creative strategies and adult learning principles.
  • Collaborates with members of the nursing leadership team to assess learning needs, develops programs, monitors clinical competency and supports action plans. Represents nursing in the development of inter-professional learning activities.
  • Promotes professional nursing practice and quality patient care according to the ANA standards of practice. Endorses the theory-based approach through the continuum of practice from Novice to Expert. 
  • Serves as a role model and guide for the professional development of nurses.
  • Develops and facilitates initial and ongoing competencies.
  • Develops, implements and manages competency based orientation.
  • Provides supportive consulting and participates in planned and unplanned process changes.
  • Champion of Scientific Inquiry Develops, educates, and implements quality improvement initiatives and outcomes.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BSN required and enrolled in a Master’s program with degree completion within two years of hire date. Master's degree highly preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH obtained prior to hire date.
  • Minimum of 5 Years of active clinical nursing experience. One year of relevant teaching experience, nursing staff development and/or specialty area preferred.
  • BLS required, ACLS preferred or obtained within one year of start.
  • Specialty Certification in Nursing Professional Development.
