Surgical Services

 

The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s Surgical Services is a growing department which covers Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Orthopedics, service lines. This team has an established record of excellence, with multiple training resources including Physician Assistant training program that has been in existence for over 25 years, and still retains the founding members. Newly graduated Advanced Practitioners or established will find the resources and support to succeed.

 

Surgical Physician Assistant Role Scope    

Provide coverage for orthopedic, neurosurgical, and urologic services, including but not limited to 1st assisting in surgery, all perioperative care, fracture care including reduction and local blocks, joint relocations, casting, catheterization and catheter management, and wound care.

 

Shift

Schedule is a 8 week template that rotates each member of the team between 13 and 27 hour weekday shifts four of those weeks and a weekend 27 hour shift the other two. This allows for a significant amount of flexibility within the team to allow for minimal disruption in life outside of work.

Advanced Practitioner Requirements

  • Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant in the state of Connecticut
  • Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant.
  •  2+ years of working as a Physician Assistant, with orthopedic experience and OR experience preferred. This should not dissuade new graduates to apply!
  • Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology; knowledge of the surgical procedures performed in the various surgical specialties and subspecialties and the supplies and equipment used in those specialties; knowledge AORN recommended practices and procedures. Knowledgeable in practices involved in patient care as it relates to different disciplines and disease states.
  • Knowledge of medications and their reactions and interactions; Counseling skills; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to work independently; ability to work under pressure.
