The Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute (COI) Nurse Educator will work at both MidState Medical Center and St.Vincent's Medical Center is an essential member of interdisciplinary team who has a strong and recent background in orthopaedics and spine care. This role will have direct responsibility for formal / informal training and mentorship for direct care employees, including support staff.
This position works in partnership with nursing leadership and the nursing professional development team of the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute. Responsibilities function within the context and framework of the Nursing Professional Development, Scope and Standards practice as approved by the American Nurses Association.
Key responsibilities include:
Design, implement and evaluate educational programs based on current evidence and practice.
Develop specialized training and education for the nursing staff in both the critical and non-critical care settings.
Evaluate and assess an educational plan for employees for a comprehensive competency based orientation program.
Assess ongoing educational needs; and develop educational content for annual competencies.
Collaborate with the department head in the development of departmental quality indicators after careful review of quality improvement issues indicating performance improvement education.
Collaborate with other educators within the Midstate Medical Center and St. Vincent’s Medical Center to standardize best practices and education.
Sharing knowledge and skills through professional presentations. Acts as a consultant in the area.
Learning Facilitator: Assesses learning needs based on evidence based practice, individual identified needs and regulatory requirements. Utilizes creative strategies and adult learning principles.
Collaborative Partner: Collaborates with members of the nursing leadership team and the COI team to assess learning needs, develops programs, monitors clinical competency and supports action plans. Represents nursing in the development of inter-professional learning activities.
Mentor: Serves as a role model for mentoring new hires in ortho/spine care and the professional development of nurses by supporting certification preparation and partnering with nurse manager to facility the pursuit of ortho certification.
Competency Management: Develops and facilitates initial and ongoing competencies.
Orientation: Develops, implements and manages competency based orientation
Change Agent: Provides supportive consulting and participates in planned and unplanned process changes.
Role Development: Promotes professional nursing practice and quality patient care according to the ANA standards of practice. Endorses the theory-based approach through the continuum of practice from Novice to Expert.
Champion of Scientific Inquiry Develops, educates, and implements quality improvement initiatives and outcomes.
