Job Summary:

The trauma registrar is responsible for the trauma registry, a data base unique to trauma patients; including patient identification, chart abstraction, procedure coding, and injury scoring. Assures the accuracy of the data that is collected and collaborates with performance improvement and administrative planning. Also ensures that trauma data is retrieved, entered, analyzed and verified in accordance with State and national mandated regulations to ensure American College of Surgeons verification and State designation for Trauma Center status. Assists with quality control activities, information requests and studies as requested. Identifies and maintains data base for trauma cases to meet State requirements and minimal standards of the American College of Surgeons. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Abstracts data from medical records for inclusion into the Trauma Registry database
  1. Utilizes the NTDB dictionary to accurately code procedures, diagnoses, and injuries using ICD-10 coding, AIS injury coding, E-codes and other appropriate coding schemes, and accurately enters into Trauma Registry within departmental guidelines
  1. Designs and maintains data base and spreadsheets as needed
  1. Ensures that trauma data is retrieved, entered, analyzed and verified in accordance with State and national mandated regulations to ensure American College of Surgeons verification and State designation for Trauma Center status
  1. Identifies cases for inclusion into the Trauma Registry Database
  1. Prepares reports based on research requests, and data reports for quality initiatives
  1. Performs data analysis and data validation on Trauma Registry Data on a routine basis for data quality and errors and omissions to maintain registry integrity
  1. Participates in performance improvement monitoring by gathering data on performance metrics, identifying and reporting complications, and performing analysis of registry data in support of clinical process improvement initiatives
  1. Assists Trauma Program Manager with special projects and the development of guidelines, etc.
  1. Assists in data preparation for the American College of Surgeons site visit.
  1. Assists those facilities with annual download to State and national trauma registries such as National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and Trauma Quality Improvement (TQIP)
  1. Maintains professional development and current knowledge of standards and data sets of NTDB and State Trauma Registry Dictionary.
  1. Maintains professional developments such as maintenance of certification Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma. Knowledge of medical terminology and of basic anatomy and physiology. Associates degree preferred in related field such as Health Information Management, etc.
  • 1 to 2 years in a position requiring knowledge of electronic medical record and PC skills with knowledge of database system such as input data and retrieving data.  Knowledge of ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding preferred.
  • Hires must complete the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Registry course and the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Injury Scaling course within 12 months of employment
  • CSTR (Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry) preferred; or completed within 24 months of employment.
